ADT provides both domestic and commercial alarm systems at the top end of the market and specialises in customized systems. Each commercial alarm system is professionally installed and comes with a 12-month warranty. The hardware and the installation comply with the new British and European standards and are insurance approved and certified.

ADT has major clients in the public sector and provides security solutions for institutions such as hospitals, prisons and schools. Public sector buildings are vulnerable not only to theft but also to arson and vandalism. As such, ADT supplies comprehensive security solutions for these types of facilities that not only include burglar detection but also fire detection as well.

This was the case at Oundle School in Peterborough, Northamptonshire, where a fire seriously damaged the school’s Stahl Theatre. As part of a major refurbishment the design of the new theatre incorporated carbon monoxide fire detectors. These detectors, supplied and installed by ADT, give a much earlier warning than standard smoke detectors and are less prone to false alarms. During a trial period, the number of false alarms fell from 20 on average, to none.

Another carbon monoxide fire detection system was installed in the independent boarding school Wellington College in Berkshire. Wellington College provides sleeping accommodation for its students, so fire prevention is of the highest priority. The college has worked in collaboration with ADT on the development of a fire detection system compliant with the requirements of Category L1 of the British Standard BS5839. This is the highest form of fire protection required in sleeping accommodation. The systems in the 16 boarding houses have all been upgraded with 31 3oTec detectors for smoke, heat and carbon monoxide.

On site at Reading University ADT installed an access control system which enabled access to certain areas for authorized individuals only. These areas are accessed using an inexpensive multi-function card system with centralized control. In addition to offering safety and security the system generates other usage data.

ADT has also worked with the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust in Liverpool on the modernisation of its security system in Liverpool Hospital. In 2003 ADT started a contract to update the hospital’s security equipment so that it would ultimately be controlled from one central monitoring base. The system consists of 170 CCTV cameras, an integrated access control system and intruder alarm system. An external security system has also been installed to monitor the staff and visitor car parks.

University College London Hospital incorporating the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson wing opened relatively recently in 2008. As a result, the building has fully integrated security systems that were designed in tandem with the building. ADT was responsible for these systems, which include a system of CCTV cameras monitored by three central control rooms. Nursing stations in wards can also view images from the entrance to their areas and alert security if there are any problems. The buildings also have advanced fire detection systems that can monitor for potential fire outbreak, control evacuation or activate the sprinkler system.
